Facing a divorce is generally a very emotional and traumatic life change.
There is a lot you need to do depending on where you are in the process, but here are a couple of practical pointers to help you get things under control, and into perspective. Assuming you are at the beginning or about to begin the process, there are a few things you can do.
First, you need to find a great attorney. Whether you are the plaintiff or the defendant, attorney choice is the single most important decision.
Next, prepare yourself for mentally and emotionally for what is coming next. There will be demands put on you, and your spouse for that matter, for information that could include documents, computers, your phone, and answers to questions.
Third, take every step you can to keep things amicable. Even if you are “right” and the one who was wronged, or if there is a high degree of contentiousness, seeking the most peaceful resolution in each step, and the ultimate outcome, will only help YOU stay sane and come through process more healthy.
No one facing divorce feels great about it, even if they say they do. This is a tough time in your life, so anchoring on to a few steps to get started, and taking baby steps will ultimately help you feel more in control.
